Medical Imaging Applications

Medical Imaging

In all domains of Medical and Scientific X-Ray imaging, replacement of legacy film and analog video processing by a fully digital workflow is underway. There are several drivers for this conversion, including increased operational efficiency and faster work flow (patient throughput), adoption of digital information workflow and archiving infrastructure in the hospitals and electronic sharing of results for peer reviews, the advanced digital image processing capabilities, and the lower X-ray dose and real-time availability that digital X-ray imaging solutions enable.

General Radiography

Perhaps the oldest and most broadly used application of penetrating X-ray imaging science is the diagnostic evaluation of soft and hard tissue conditions in humans. Teledyne DALSA digital X-ray cameras are well suited for soft tissue radiography (10kV to 50kV) of patient extremities with resolution between 5 lp/mm to10 lp/mm, as well as higher energy 50kV to >100kV radiography for thick or dense structures such as the head.

Products: Helios10 MD panel, SkiaGraph panels, custom modules

Dental Imaging

Teledyne DALSA has significant experience in image sensors for dental radiography, both panoramic or intra-oral. Our CMOS designs offer features such as the ability to optimize ratio between outside dimensions and optical format or to determine the correct dose for each patient during the actual exposures to minimize retakes. We deliver radiation-hard designs for long device lifetime and optimal image quality, and we have access to housing technology designed for harsh environments with respect to shocks and vibrations and withstanding standard cleaning chemicals.

Tissue Biopsy

Large area tiled sensor panel technology is successfully used in surgical settings to quickly analyze recently excised tissue samples and inspect for lesions in the margins. Breast and other tissue samples are placed in X-ray biopsy systems during surgery for rapid feedback on surgical effectiveness.

Products: Xineos flat panels, SkiaGraph flat panels, Shad-o-Box panels, Remote Radeye panels , custom modules

Bone Densitometry

A very natural fit for Teledyne DALSA digital X-ray technology is the application of measuring changes in bone thickness and density (fingers, femur bone) over time. Bone densitometry systems measure small variations in diameter and transmission of X-ray energy to determine decline of bone mass for patients with Osteoporosis or other diseases causing bone loss.

Biotechnology: Small Animal Imaging

Digital X-ray imaging is used in biotechnology research to characterize the properties of new pharmaceuticals and treatments, often using small laboratory animals for imaging subjects. CT scanning of live organs that have been injected with a radioisotope reveals a 3D picture of the migration of a molecules of a specific size to regions where tumors have constricted blood flow. Teledyne DALSA’s digital X-ray cameras are used to detect the structure of the animal as well as the photons emitted from the radioisotope.
